Bent and Hanging Garden are now out on video

Two gay themed films are making their way to the home video market on May 18. Academy Award nominee Ian McKellan (Gods and Monsters, Richard III), rock legend Mick Jagger, Clive Owen (The Rich Man's Wife), and Lothaire Bluteau (I Shot Andy Warhol) star in Bent, a moving tale of love and courage set in a World War II concentration camp.

Adapted by renowned British stage director Sean Methias, their 1997 theatrical release reveals the story of a gay inmate's recognition, while pretending to be Jewish, that life without love is meaningless.

Bent is based on Martin Sherman's groundbreaking play and explores the Nazis' persecution of gays while following one man's struggle to maintain his dignity. The film also features a colorful performance by Mick Jagger.

Max (Clive Owen) is a handsome, gay young man who lives for the decadent nightlife of Berlin while the threat of Nazi persecution unfolds around him. But he can no longer ignore the atrocities when he is discovered in a fateful tryst with a soldier,

and forced to run for his life.

Pursued and captured, Max is placed in a concentration camp where he quickly learns that his chances for survival depend on him pretending to be Jewish, because gays are, in the eyes of the Nazis, the lowest form of human being.

In the camp quarry, Max meets Horst (Bluteau), an openly gay prisoner, who bonds with him during their time spent performing menial tasks. Their relationship teaches Max a life-altering lesson: without the love of another, life is not worth living.

Also available on home video May 18 is The Hanging Garden, a film that earned the People's Choice Award for the Most Popular Film, as well as the Best Canadian Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival.
